Livingston, Scotland — UK
The Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) facilities of Kaiam are located in Livingston UK (approx. 15 miles west of Edinburgh). The site, which was originally owned by PLC start-up Kymata, benefitted from some $200M of investment in 1999/2000. Further investment came by way of subsequent owners Alcatel Optronics and Avanex.
Today the site has a total of 57,000 sq. ft. of space, (33,000 of which is dedicated to manufacturing), and features a very large Class 100 clean room, plus additional class 10,000 clean room space. This contains the state of the art deposition, photolithography, etching, testing and assembly equipment necessary to process many hundreds of 8” silicon wafers, and to test and output thousands of PLC die and modules on a monthly basis. Full Telcordia Qualification and Reliability testing facilities are also available.
At the Livingston site, Kaiam develops and manufactures innovative PLC-based components and modules for direct sale to the telecom and datacom markets, as well as in support of the Kaiam Tx/Rx products.
