KAIAM ANNOUNCES $8M IN SERIES A FINANCING AND INDUSTRIAL CONTRACTS
NEWARK, CA — March 1, 2011 — Kaiam Corporation, a developer of hybrid photonic integrated circuits for the fiber optic communications industry, announced today that it has secured a total of approximately $8M in combined Series A financing and commercial contracts. Chris Rust, of US Venture Partners led the round, and will assume a seat on the Kaiam board of directors. The commercial funding was led by two large industrial partners, each sponsoring the development of hybrid PIC technology for a different application.
Kaiam Corporation was recently founded by a number of industry veterans with the goal of developing and commercializing a new MEMS-based platform for photonic integrated circuits. The advantage of the technology is that it can use standard discrete and proven components to build PICs, without the tight alignment constraints of conventional hybrid approaches. The platform is flexible and can yield PICs for various needs. Unlike monolithically integrated approaches to PICs that require sophisticated fabrication facilities or hybrid approaches that need costly and specialized packaging tools, the company can leverage existing tooling at contract manufacturers for production, and can source standard components from numerous vendors.
“The company founders have previously proven themselves with innovative products that have dominated the market and have now shown a clear and compelling plan for the success of Kaiam. The commercial contracts indicate the need for their technology and validates the approach,” commented Chris Rust of USVP.
“I am delighted to work with Chris again, as he was the founding VC of my previous startup,” said Dr. Bardia Pezeshki, President and CEO. “The venture funding will allow us to build out the company, while the commercial contracts give us early adopters of the technology and a path to product revenue.”
