KAIAM CORPORATION INTRODUCES A 40GB/S QSFP+ LR4 TRANSCEIVER WITH INTEGRATED OPTICAL ENGINES FOR USE IN HIGH VOLUME APPLICATIONS AT OFC 2014
The Kaiam QSFP+ LR4 Transceiver Line has been Established in the Company’s Vertically Integrated Scotland Volume Manufacturing Facility
NEWARK CA — March 10, 2014 — Kaiam Corporation, a leader in hybrid Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) technology, announces availability of their 40Gb/s CWDM QSFP+ LR4 transceiver at OFC 2014, booth #1735 in San Francisco. The standards-compliant QSFP+ transceiver has all the functionality of four DML-based SFP+s on a CWDM grid, and also includes a first stage wavelength multiplexer and de-multiplexer.
The modules are manufactured in the Company’s 60,000-square-foot facility in Livingston, Scotland. The silicon photonics sub-components are manufactured internally in the facility, forming a highly efficient vertically integrated production line. Kaiam’s MEMS-based coupling technology, together with other high volume automated equipment minimizes the labor content and assures low cost, consistent production output suitable for high volume applications.
Dietmar Zapf, VP of Operations, Kaiam, commented, “The Company is able to leverage previous investment of more than $150 million in the former Gemfire facility. Kaiam has also made significant additional investment in this world-class facility to support the volume production required by the market. Drawing from the experienced and highly skilled personnel in the Livingston area, the Scotland team has grown to nearly 200 people to support the market demand. Automated assembly tools have been installed that ensure consistent, low cost, high volume production.”
These QSFP+ LR4 modules leverage the Kaiam integration engine technology. This technique results in superior alignment and attachment processes for better optical coupling, higher manufacturing yield and consistent robust optical performance. The module is approximately half the size of four individual SFP+s and a fraction of the cost, thus saving customers from both the size and cost perspective. These transceivers are available today.
Lance Thompson, Ph.D., Director of the QSFP+ Transceiver team for Kaiam commented, “The growth in bandwidth demand is stressing enterprise and data center customers. They are seeking solutions that enable high-speed (40Gb/s) efficient and cost effective movement of data. These modules are designed for the very demanding low cost datacom market and use automated assembly and test tools that ensure maximum throughput and consistent performance.”
