KAIAM DEMONSTRATES ULTRA-COMPACT 100GB/S (4X28GB/S) SINGLE MODE TRANSMITTER OPTICAL SUBASSEMBLY (TOSA) AT OFC 2014
The 100Gb/s TOSA, realized with Kaiam’s MEMS-based optical integration technology, can be used in compact QSFP transceivers for low power consumption applications
NEWARK CA — March 11, 2014 — Kaiam Corporation, a leader in hybrid Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) technology, will demonstrate a 100Gb/s (four lanes at 28Gb/s) transmitter optical subassembly at OFC 2014, booth #1735. Current 100Gb/s transceivers are generally too large, and consume too much power, for high volume applications. The critical component has been the transmitter that generates four signals at 28Gb/s each and a wavelength multiplexer that combines the four lanes into a single fiber. By using internally sourced compact Planar Lightwave Circuits (PLC), and MEMS-based coupling of directly modulated lasers, Kaiam is demonstrating a transmitter that fits into the standard 40Gb/s QSFP form factor. The MEMS-based coupling frees up constraints in the high-speed lines, so that a lower cost architecture with external drivers to the package can be implemented. The same package is suitable for IEEE-standard based LAN-WDM wavelengths, as well as the lower power consumption CWDM variant. Engineering samples at both wavelength sets will be available in the early third quarter of 2014.
“It’s all about performance and cost. The superior RF performance of our packaging gives wide-open transmitter eyes even with external laser drivers,” commented Thomas Schrans, Vice President of Advanced Product Development at Kaiam. “The low cost lithographically-produced components and the minimal labor content due to automatic MEMS-based alignment allow Kaiam to reach the cost points necessary for high volume applications.”
“Our current 40Gb/s transceiver is ramping in volume and satisfying customers who want the performance and reliability that our solution offers. Being able to lithographically fabricate the subcomponents at low cost in silicon gives us an unassailable advantage,” added Bardia Pezeshki, CEO of Kaiam. “The 100Gb/s TOSA uses the same low cost and simple integration approach as our current 40Gb/s transceiver and will put us in the leadership position in the emerging 100Gb/s data networking market.”
